ATP rankings: Fery climbs 78 places to No. 36, Zverev back at No. 2

Seventy-eight. That is how many places Arthur Fery climbed in the ATP rankings this week, from 114 to 36, and every one of them came out of a single fortnight at Wimbledon. Above him the other big move was a return: Alexander Zverev, who beat Fery in the semi-final and lost the final, is back at No. 2, the highest he has ever been ranked.

Zverev first reached second place on 13 June 2022 and has held it for 36 weeks across the four years since, never once going higher. He arrives back there in the season he finally won a major, and he does it by taking the place off Carlos Alcaraz, who slips to third. Jannik Sinner, who beat him in the Wimbledon final, stays No. 1 and is one of only two men in the top ten to hold his place.

Fery is the week's other story and the biggest mover on either tour. He walked into Wimbledon ranked 114th, beat Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round and Flavio Cobolli, now ninth in the world, in the quarter-final, and won five matches in all before Zverev stopped him in straight sets. The 750 ranking points that run was worth lifted him past 78 players at once. He is 24, he had never been ranked higher than 114 before this week, and he is now inside the top 50.

Others climbed out of the same draw. Roman Safiullin came through three rounds of qualifying and then three more in the main draw before Novak Djokovic ended it in the fourth round, which took him from 132 back inside the top 100 at 96. Jan Lennard Struff, 36 and the oldest man among the week's climbers, beat Hubert Hurkacz on his way to the quarter-final and rose from 74 to 41. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was the only new arrival in the top 20, from 23 to 20, which makes a second Spaniard up there where last week there was one. The steepest fall belonged to Marin Cilic, 37, out to Daniil Medvedev in his opening match and down from 62 to 88, while Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-final and still slid from seventh to tenth.
