Swiatek drawn into Rybakina's quarter at the US Open

Five hundred and eighty. That is the ranking of Thea Frodin, the wildcard who opens the US Open against second seed Elena Rybakina. The women's singles draw was made today, ahead of the tournament's start on 30 August, with top seed Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and defending champion, opening against Camila Osorio.

Sabalenka is the top seed and the defending champion, after winning the title in 2024 and 2025. She opens against Osorio, ranked 58. Rybakina, seeded 2, opens against Frodin, the wildcard ranked 580. Jessica Pegula, the third seed, opens against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, ranked 63, and fourth seed Coco Gauff, the champion here in 2023, opens against Zeynep Sonmez, ranked 52.

The bracket's earliest notable test sits in Rybakina's quarter, where Iga Swiatek, seed 8, is the lowest remaining seed there and so the projected quarterfinal opponent for the second seed. Sabalenka's own quarter has Linda Noskova, seed 6, as its lowest seed, and Pegula's has Karolina Muchova, seed 7. Sabalenka and Pegula share the top half, which makes Pegula the projected semifinal opponent for the top seed. In the bottom half, Gauff's quarter has Mirra Andreeva, seed 5, as its lowest seed, and Gauff shares that half with Rybakina, who is projected to meet Gauff in the semifinal.

Three first-round matches stand apart from the seeds. Venus Williams, ranked 611 and champion here in 2000 and 2001, plays Sofia Kenin, a former world No. 4 now ranked 110. Sloane Stephens, the 2017 champion, plays Clara Tauson, ranked 42. Daria Kasatkina, a former world No. 8, plays Paula Badosa, a former world No. 2. The withdrawal list includes Emma Raducanu and Victoria Mboko, and 16 qualifying places in the draw are still to be filled.
