Merida Aguilar, 21, wins Umag for a first tour title

One. Daniel Merida Aguilar, 21 and ranked 82nd, is a tour-level champion for the first time. He beat Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the Croatia Open Umag final, breaking serve seven times along the way and recovering from serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and losing it 7-5, the only set he dropped all week.

The numbers describe a match Merida controlled without ever fully closing it out. He won 53 percent of total points, 87 of 163, to Dzumhur's 47 percent, and served better across the afternoon: 69 percent of first serves in against Dzumhur's 65 percent, 60 percent of service points won (50 of 84) against 53 percent (42 of 79). Merida hit one ace to Dzumhur's none but also eight double faults to Dzumhur's one, and it was the return games that separated them: Merida won seven of fourteen, Dzumhur four of fourteen, service games won going 71 percent to 50 percent in Merida's favour. Break points swung back and forth all match: Merida converted seven of twelve and saved two of six; Dzumhur converted four of six but saved only five of twelve.

The set that decided the tournament was the second. Merida broke for 2-1, was pegged back to 4-4, then broke again to serve for the match at 5-4. Dzumhur broke straight back for 5-5 and, two games later, broke once more to take the set 7-5, the only set lost by either finalist across Merida's week and a rare show of resistance from Dzumhur. Merida reset in the decider: he broke to open it 1-0, was broken back for 1-1, then broke twice more, in the fifth and seventh games, to lead 5-2 and serve out the title 6-2 on his first match point.

Merida had not dropped a set all week before that second-set stumble, winning four straight matches to reach the final: 6-4, 6-1 over Ziga Sesko, 7-5, 6-4 over third seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, ranked 30th, in the second round, 6-1, 6-3 over Titouan Droguet in the quarter-final and 6-4, 6-2 over Roman Andres Burruchaga in the semi-final. Dzumhur, 34 and ranked 108th, had the harder route to the final: a quarter-final over fourth seed Matteo Arnaldi that went three tiebreaks, 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 7-6(4), and a semi-final over Alex Molcan won from a set down, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. It was the pair's first meeting; the head-to-head now reads 1-0 to Merida.
