Boogaard, 17, comes within a point of Medvedev
One point. That is how close Thijs Boogaard, the 17-year-old Dutch wildcard ranked 779, came to beating Daniil Medvedev before the world No 8 escaped 6-3 4-6 7-6(6) in Rosmalen.
The gap on paper was 771 ranking places. On grass it was a single point. Boogaard, who had never won a tour-level match before this week, served his way back into the match after losing the first set 6-3, took the second 6-4, and pushed the deciding set into a tiebreak.
There, at 6-5, the teenager held a match point against a former US Open champion. Medvedev saved it and won the last three points of the match for 8-6 in the breaker, the kind of escape that decides a week.
For Boogaard the week was already a first. On Wednesday he beat Yibing Wu 6-3 2-6 6-4 for his first ATP main-draw win, two days after his home tournament handed him a wildcard. Almost a tennis fairytale for the young Dutchman. Medvedev had little time to enjoy the escape: his quarter-final against Marin Cilic was interrupted by rain later the same day at a set apiece.
