Vekic wins Queen’s, a first grass title in nine years

2017. That is the last time Donna Vekic had won a grass-court title, and on Sunday at Queen’s she finally won another.

Vekic spent the week beating the home favourites on British grass. She came through Karolina Pliskova 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the quarter-finals, then beat Katie Boulter 6-1 6-3 in the semi-finals, the second of three British players she knocked out on the way to the title.

The third was the biggest. Emma Raducanu, the home crowd behind her, took the second set to a tiebreak but no further: Vekic won the opening set 6-0 and closed out the breaker 7-6(6) for a 6-0 7-6(6) win, the title settled without a deciding set.

It is Vekic’s first title of any kind since Monterrey in 2023, and only the second grass title of her career. The first came back in 2017 at Nottingham, against Johanna Konta. Nine years on, a different patch of British grass gave her the next one.
