Siniakova, ranked 86, concedes one game in the Osaka final
One. That is how many games Ashlyn Krueger won in the Osaka final. Katerina Siniakova, ranked 86, beat her 6-1 6-0 on Sunday for her sixth tour title and her first since 2023.
The numbers say how lopsided it was. Siniakova won 54 of the 85 points to Krueger's 31, and won every one of her six service games. Krueger held once in six. She won 49 percent of her first-serve points (17 of 35) and 27 percent of her second-serve points (3 of 11), and she made 29 unforced errors to Siniakova's 17.
The match was settled early. Siniakova broke in the opening game, broke again in the fifth to lead 4-1, and broke once more to take the first set 6-1. The second set was quicker still: she broke for 2-0 and ran out the set 6-0 without dropping serve. She converted five of her eight break points, while Krueger saved two of eight and had one chance of her own, which she did not take. Neither player came within a point of the match at any stage.
It is Siniakova's sixth tour title, following Bad Homburg and Nanchang in 2023, and she came through two seeds to reach the final. In the opening round she beat second seed Peyton Stearns, who retired when trailing 6-4 0-6 4-0, then Magda Linette 6-4 6-1, Mary Stoiana 6-1 6-2 and eighth seed Katie Boulter 6-1 6-4 in the semifinals. For Krueger, who won her only previous tour title at this same event in 2023, the week was a good one until Sunday: she beat top seed Ann Li 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3 in the semifinals to get here. The only earlier meeting between the two was in the Lleida 125 quarterfinals in 2024, and Siniakova won that one too, 2-6 6-2 6-1.
