Parry survives a 0-6 set to win her first tour title in Monterrey

Three. That is how many seeded players Diane Parry beat this week in Monterrey: Donna Vekic, the sixth seed, in the opening round; Ann Li, the fifth seed, in the semi-final; and Elise Mertens, the second seed, in a final she won 6-4 0-6 6-3 for her first tour-level title.

Parry arrived in Monterrey ranked No. 50 and unseeded in the 32-player draw. At 23, she had three career titles, all at challenger level, none on tour, and had never before reached a tour-level final. This one she reached by going through the draw's higher seeds rather than around them, beating Vekic at the first hurdle and Li in the semi-final before Mertens in the final.

The final itself swung from one extreme to the other. Parry took the first set 6-4, then won nothing at all in the second, beaten 0-6, before resetting immediately in the third: a break to open it, a second to lead 5-1, and after Mertens pulled one back she closed it out on her first match point, 6-4 0-6 6-3.

The number that ran under the whole match was break points. Parry saved 12 of the 17 she faced, 71 percent, the difference between surviving her own bagel and losing the match inside it; Mertens saved only 4 of her 8. It is Parry's first tour-level title, and her first tour-level final ended in the trophy rather than the runner-up line.
