Unseeded and ranked 127, Arthur Gea wins his first ATP title in Los Cabos

One. That is how many tour-level finals Arthur Gea has played, and he has won it. The 21-year-old Frenchman, unseeded and ranked 127th, beat the defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 in the Los Cabos final for his first ATP title.

Arthur Gea had never won a tour-level title and never reached a tour-level final before Sunday. The only trophy on his record anywhere came at Challenger level. None of that showed in the way he served out the defending champion, a straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-4, over a player ranked 68th in the world and seeded eighth.

The final turned on Shapovalov's serve and his break points: nine double faults to Gea's four, and just one of seven break points converted while Gea saved six of his seven. Gea broke to lead 5-3 in the first set and served it out 6-3; in the second he broke in the third game for 2-1, was broken back to 3-3, then broke again in the seventh game for 4-3 and served out the match on the second of two match points, 6-4. The route here was no smoother. In the second round Gea lost the first set 0-6 to Michael Zheng before winning the last two 6-4, 6-0, and in the quarterfinals he beat the third seed and world number 20 Francisco Cerundolo 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, after losing the opening tiebreak 13-11.

It is Gea's first tour-level title and his first tour-level final. For Shapovalov, the defending champion after winning Los Cabos in 2025, it is a sixth final lost against five won. The two had never met before Sunday; the head-to-head now reads 1-0, Gea's way.
