Ranked 83, Quentin Halys wins his first ATP title, beating defending champion Bublik at Kitzbuhel

Eighty-three. That is where Quentin Halys was ranked coming into Kitzbuhel this week, and it did not matter: he beat the world number 11 and defending champion Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6(6) for the first ATP tour-level title of his career, in his second tour final at 29.

The scoreline was closer than the tennis behind it. Halys hit 17 aces to Bublik's 6, went the whole match without facing a single break point, 0 from 0, and won 87 percent of the points behind his first serve, 33 from 38. He took 81 of the match's 150 points, 54 percent, and out of the 22 return games between them he won the only one that counted: one break in eleven, against none at all from Bublik in his eleven.

That single break decided the first set. With Bublik serving to stay in it at 4-5, Halys broke for 6-4. The second set went with serve to 6-6 and needed a tiebreak, which Halys won 8-6 for a 7-6(6) set, sealing the title on his first match point, the only match point either player saw all day.

The win is Halys' first tour-level title, arriving in his second tour final; his career log holds seven titles at Challenger level and below, but none at tour level until this week. He reached the final by beating the number 2 seed, Valentin Vacherot, in the second round, 6-3, 6-4, then Mariano Navone in the quarter-finals and Yannick Hanfmann in the semi-final. Bublik, the number 1 seed, arrived as the defending champion from 2025 and a nine-time tour titlist. The pair had met once before, twelve days earlier at Gstaad, where Halys won 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(5); he has now beaten Bublik twice inside a fortnight, and the head-to-head reads 2-0 in his favour. At 29, and 19-14 on the season, it is a first title that took him a full career to reach.
