Never lost to Bondar: Korpatsch wins Hamburg for a second title, first since 2023

Four. That is how many times Tamara Korpatsch has played Anna Bondar, and how many times she has won. Korpatsch beat Bondar 6-3, 6-3 in the Hamburg final for her second career title, her first since Cluj Napoca in 2023.

Korpatsch, 31 and ranked 81, arrived in Hamburg seeded fifth on a season record of 11-7. In the final she gave Bondar almost nothing on her own serve: 2 aces, 76 percent of first serves in, 71 percent of first-serve points won, and 8 of 9 service games held, 89 percent. She did the rest of the damage on return, converting 4 of 7 break points and saving 2 of 3 of her own, for 63 of the match's 113 points, 56 percent.

The first set went with the pattern that would hold. Korpatsch broke early for 2-0, Bondar broke back to close to 4-3, but Korpatsch broke again for 5-3 and served out the set 6-3. The second set was more direct: a break for 3-2, then another to close it out 6-3, Korpatsch needing only one match point to convert.

The title is Korpatsch's second, three years after her only previous one, in Cluj Napoca in 2023, and the week to get there was not always tidy. Her opening-round win over Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva came from a set down, 4-6 7-5 1-0, when her opponent retired, and her semi-final win over Mayar Sherif ended the same way, 6-1 2-0. In between she beat second seed Anhelina Kalinina 6-3 1-6 6-1 in the quarter-final. For Anna Bondar, 29 and seeded fourth, it is a second career final lost without ever winning one; her rivalry with Korpatsch, which began in the 2021 Gdynia quarter-final and ran through a Budapest 125 semi-final and a three-set Ningbo meeting in 2024, now reads 4-0, the record she carries into whatever they play next.
