Keys wins Eastbourne again, twelve years after her first title there

2014. That is the year Madison Keys won the first title of her career, at Eastbourne, and on Saturday she won the same tournament a third time, beating Tatjana Maria 7-5 6-4 without dropping a set all week.

Eastbourne keeps giving Keys trophies. Her maiden title came here in 2014, over Angelique Kerber; she won it again in 2023, over Daria Kasatkina; now a third, over Maria. Three of her eleven career titles have come on this one stretch of grass.

The week was close to flawless. She beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-0 6-1 and McCartney Kessler 6-3 6-1, led Petra Marcinko 6-1 when the Croatian retired in the semi-final, and never lost a set on the way to the final.

The reigning Australian Open champion arrives at Wimbledon in form. Her previous final, in Paris in May, had ended in a retirement of her own; Eastbourne answered it. Twelve years after it started here, the same grass handed her another.
