Davidovich Fokina wins Chengdu for a second title this year, with five lost finals behind him
One. That is how many times Alejandro Davidovich Fokina broke Hubert Hurkacz in the Chengdu final, and it was the only break either man managed. Davidovich Fokina won 6-4 7-6(7) for his second tour title, both of them won this year, at a career that now holds five lost finals and two won.
Hurkacz had the louder serve. He hit 17 aces to Davidovich Fokina's 8 and held 10 of his 11 service games. But Davidovich Fokina held all 11 of his, won 46 of his 53 points on a first serve (87 percent), and finished 88 points to 73 over the match. Hurkacz won just 7 of the 53 first-serve points he returned.
The one break came in the seventh game of the first set, which put Davidovich Fokina ahead 4-3, and he served out the set 6-4. The second set stayed on serve to 6-6. Hurkacz saved five of the six break points he faced across the match, but the tiebreak went the other way: Davidovich Fokina took it 9-7 and closed the final, with one match point row on his side of the ledger and none on Hurkacz's.
The route to the trophy was not smooth. The second seed dropped the opening set against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the semi-final, 4-6, before winning 6-4 6-3. Hurkacz, the fifth seed, had beaten Denis Shapovalov in his own semi-final after losing a first-set tiebreak. At 27, Davidovich Fokina adds Chengdu to Mallorca, the only other tour title on his record, and now leads the head-to-head with Hurkacz 5-2. For Hurkacz, 29, with nine tour titles, it is a seventh lost final.
