Muchova wins Bad Homburg for a first grass title

Two. That is how many titles Karolina Muchova had won, both on hard courts, and on Saturday she added a third on a surface she had never won on: a first grass title in Bad Homburg, sealed when Naomi Osaka retired from the final at 6-1 1-0.

Muchova has gone deep at the biggest events, a French Open finalist in 2023 and a Cincinnati finalist, but the trophies had been few: Seoul in 2019 and Doha this February, both on hard courts. On grass she had a level 12 wins, 12 losses and nothing to show for it.

The week turned on a recovery. She beat Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1 6-1, came from a set down to beat Clara Tauson 1-6 6-2 6-4 and saw off Gabriela Ruse 6-4 6-4. In the final she took the first set 6-1 and led 1-0 when Osaka, into the final herself, retired.

The timing matters. Muchova’s last two Wimbledons both ended in the first round, beaten by Paula Badosa in 2024 and Xin Yu Wang in 2025. A first grass title, days before this one, sends her to London with something those results had not given her: confidence on the surface.
