Uzbek tennis, a short history

Ranked No. 117, Denis Istomin beat world No. 2 Novak Djokovic in the second round of the 2017 Australian Open, 7-6(8), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, in a match that ran four hours and 48 minutes. He fell in the fourth round to Grigor Dimitrov. His career-high ranking of world No. 33, reached in August 2012, and his 2 tour titles, at Nottingham in 2015 and Chengdu in 2017, stand as the best by any Uzbek man in the archive.

Iroda Tulyaganova climbed higher still, to world No. 16 in June 2002, with 3 tour titles won in Tashkent, Vienna and Knokke-Heist. She reached the third round at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and won Asian Games gold in singles in 2002, beating Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in the final. Akgul Amanmuradova reached world No. 50 in 2008, the next-best ranking mark among Uzbek women in the archive.
