Turkish tennis, a short history

Turkey's women own the country's milestones. Cagla Buyukakcay won the 2016 Istanbul Cup, the first WTA singles title by a Turkish woman, and was the first Turkish woman to crack the top 100. Zeynep Sonmez followed with the 2024 Merida title and has since become the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history. One WTA tour title apiece, 1 and 1, two genuine trailblazers.

The men's record is still being written. No Turkish man has reached a Grand Slam final, and the tour-title column remains empty, with the breakthrough yet to come for Mert Alkaya and Yanki Erel.
