Portuguese tennis, a short history
Portuguese tennis is yet to produce a Grand Slam champion or finalist, so its high points are measured in tour titles. Joao Sousa is the benchmark, the most decorated player the country has fielded with 4 tour-level titles and a career high of world No. 28 in 2016. Nuno Borges has since carried the standard forward, winning his first tour title in Bastad in 2024 by beating Rafael Nadal in a clay-court final and climbing to a career high of No. 30.
On the women's side the record is lighter, with the Jorge sisters, Francisca Jorge and Matilde Jorge, leading the present generation rather than a roll of past champions.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
