Filipino tennis, a short history
In 2022 Alexandra Eala became the first Filipina to win a Grand Slam junior singles title, taking the US Open girls' crown without dropping a set. On the senior tour she went further: a wildcard run to the 2025 Miami Open semi-finals, past three Grand Slam champions in a row, made her the first Filipino to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final. At Wimbledon 2026 she beat Iga Swiatek on the way to the fourth round, the deepest any Filipina has gone at a major. Both her titles in the archive came at WTA 125 level, in Guadalajara in 2025 and Birmingham in 2026.
The men's side leans on Cecil Mamiit, Los Angeles-born, who switched from the United States to play Davis Cup for the Philippines and won six Southeast Asian Games golds. He peaked at world No. 72 in 1999, and his seven Challenger titles are the most by a Filipino man, though none has won at tour level. Further back, in 1953 Felicisimo Ampon reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals, still the best a Filipino has managed at a major.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
