Peruvian tennis, a short history

The men's high point runs through Jaime Yzaga, who reached a career high of No. 18 in 1989 and won 8 tour titles. At the 1994 US Open he beat Cedric Pioline and then Pete Sampras in five sets to reach the quarter-finals, the country's deepest men's run of the Open era in our archive. Luis Horna, who peaked at No. 33 and took 2 singles titles, handed Roger Federer his last first-round Grand Slam loss at the 2003 Roland Garros and later won the 2008 Roland Garros men's doubles, a doubles crown not a singles one. Before the Open era, Alejandro Olmedo won the 1959 Australian and Wimbledon singles.

On the women's side, Laura Arraya, who competed for much of her career as Laura Gildemeister, reached a career high of No. 14 in 1990 and won 10 tour titles, with a run to the 1991 Wimbledon quarter-finals. Pilar Vasquez added 4 titles. No Peruvian woman has reached an Open-era Grand Slam singles semi-final in our archive.
