Israeli tennis, a short history
The men's game found its footing in the 1980s. Shlomo Glickstein won 2 tour titles and reached a career high of No. 22 in 1982, the first Israeli inside the top 25. Amos Mansdorf went further, winning 6 titles, climbing to No. 18 in 1987 and reaching the 1992 Australian Open quarter-finals. Israel's deepest team run came in 2009, when the Davis Cup side beat Russia and reached the semi-finals.
The women's record is led by two players. Anna Smashnova won 12 tour titles and reached a career high of No. 15 in 2003. Shahar Peer climbed to No. 11 in 2011, the highest ranking any Israeli has held, and became the first Israeli woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final, doing so at both the 2007 Australian Open and the 2007 US Open. Paulina Peisachov added 3 titles.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
