Georgian tennis, a short history
The men's story runs through Tbilisi and one modern breakthrough. Nikoloz Basilashvili won 5 tour titles, among them back to back Hamburg crowns in 2018 and 2019 and the 2018 China Open in Beijing, and climbed to a career high of No. 16 in 2019. In 2021 he reached the Indian Wells final, the first Georgian representing the country as an independent nation to make a Masters 1000 final. His best Grand Slam run was the 2018 US Open fourth round.
The women's benchmark was set a generation earlier. Leila Meskhi, born in Tbilisi, won 5 tour singles titles between 1989 and the early 1990s and reached a career high of No. 12 in 1991. Her deepest major run came at the 1990 US Open, where she made the quarter-finals before losing to Gabriela Sabatini. Starting out under the Soviet flag, she took a doubles bronze for the Unified Team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
