Egyptian tennis, a short history

Ismail El Shafei reached the 1974 Wimbledon quarter-finals, beating Bjorn Borg in straight sets on the way and remaining one of only four men to beat Borg at Wimbledon. He climbed to world No. 34 in 1975, still the highest by an Egyptian man, and won 2 tour titles. Mohamed Safwat picked up the thread decades later, in 2020 the first Egyptian man since El Shafei in 1978 to reach the Australian Open main draw.

The women's record is newer and now the country's strongest. Mayar Sherif was the first Egyptian woman in a Grand Slam main draw, at the 2020 French Open, and won her first WTA title in Parma in 2022, beating world No. 7 Maria Sakkari in the final. In 2023 she reached world No. 31, the highest ranking by an Egyptian of either tour in the Open era, and became the first Egyptian to reach a WTA 1000 quarter-final, in Madrid.
