Bulgarian tennis, a short history
The men's story belongs to Grigor Dimitrov, with 9 tour titles and a career high of world number 3 in 2017. Nicknamed Baby Federer for his one-handed game, he has reached three Grand Slam semifinals: the US Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2014.
The women carry the deeper history. The Maleeva sisters lead the all-time count, Katerina Maleeva with 11 tour titles and Magdalena Maleeva with 10. Tsvetana Pironkova reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2010, the first Bulgarian to make a Grand Slam singles semifinal, beating Venus Williams along the way.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
