Belgian tennis, a short history
The men's record is built on near misses at the top level. Xavier Malisse reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2002, the country's best Grand Slam run by a man. David Goffin stands as the most decorated Belgian on the ATP, with 6 tour titles and a career high of world No. 7, the only Belgian man to reach the top ten.
The women carry the country's heaviest silverware. Justine Henin won 7 Grand Slam singles titles, four at Roland Garros plus the 2003 and 2007 US Opens and the 2004 Australian Open, and took Olympic gold at Athens in 2004. Kim Clijsters added 4 majors, three US Opens and the 2011 Australian Open, both women reaching world No. 1. Elise Mertens carried the line forward with an Australian Open semi-final in 2018 and 10 tour titles.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
